The fourth and last stage of the Alpin Cup.
It was Thursday morning on the 20th of January and I was ready to leave for Saas Fee, the only stage of the World Ice Climbing Cup which I really wanted to take part in. It was a chance to see old friends who I only got to see on these occasions. And then there was that desire to get a good result like in the old days.
But on the same day there was the final of the Alpin Cup in Monguelfo and if I participated I had a good chance of winning the competition even if Herbert Klammer was only a few points behind me in the ranks.
A big decision to make... one hand on the door knob and the other on the steering wheel. I was so tired that the thought of 12 hours behind the wheel... dear Switzerland... was enough to make me abandon the idea of the long journey and go to Monguelfo instead.
I could win the Cup... but maybe not! There was a risk to take because a race is always a race and even the smallest distraction can take you out of the rankings. And that’s what happened to Herbert. Unfortunately for him and, fortunately for, me he made some mistakes and gave me the Cp!
But the race itself went to the very strong Hannes Pfeifhof: my lost half... in years... and in weight! He really deserved his victory!
 
However, the overall winners were the "Group" who had been inseparable since January and who till the moment we said goodbye stuck together and had lots of fun.
