When I
think of the Daone Valley I remember 2001 when the first stage of the World Ice
Climbing Cup was organized for the first time.
I spent unforgettable days... unforgettable because of the warmth of the people there: the organizers,
the locals, the Fire Brigade, The Customs Police... and the athletes themselves, like the winner Stefan
Husson who stood on the podium one step higher than me and who, during the awards ceremony, whispered to me
that I really deserved second place... because that was his race!
I think what made him say that was the noise the spectators made during my trial run!
The winner on the day was my inner peace during the competition: nothing to lose... just have fun!
However, this state of mind abandoned me in the following years when the tension of competition made me lose
my head... but the worst of it is that I didn’t even have any fun!
This year though... with years of experience... I realized that more than ever I can’t expect much from myself if
I don’t train seriously... I handled the tension of the competition well... almost with resignation! With the "right
spirit" I managed to have fun and spend four marvellous days like I did back in 2001!
As the representative for the Daone Valley my job at the opening ceremony was to bless the ice axes and crampons and
then to light the Olympic tripod... but to at least get to the final was something I wanted and I kept it to myself...
above all I kept it from the spectators in the valley who were watching and applauding all day long.
I hope this competition will continue for years to come and I promise that I'll continue (as a veteran) to be there in
the starting list... even if the competition is just an excuse... an excuse that will allow me to teach the "right spirit"
to young athletes... "spirit" that we need to have on these occasions otherwise all will be lost! That would be something
I couldn't bear!
