This was also a brief intense moment on the alpine slopes.
My first descent was the north face of the Marmolada in 1985. A friend gave me a lift and then I climbed up. It was my first time alone in the mountains. It was all so strange, also because I had to decide everything for myself. Once at the top, I put on my skis and descended the steepest part but, slowed down by doubts and insecurities, it took me a long while before I took that first turning. And now, even after so many descents, there's always that first turning.
For a couple of years I let those descents get to me and, after a few falls and other incidents, I started to lose my enthusiasm and hung my skis up as if a toy had been broken.
...and I don't regret a thing.
