Vertical Miles... the film
With: Mauro "Bubu" Bole and Mauro Corona
Director: Cristian Furlan
Length: 45 minutes

Vertical miles is the title of this video ideated by Cristian Furlan who, two years after "Tool'em all" wanted to do something completely different.

We had quite a lot of hours of footage going back to 1999 when I climbed the via Couzy, the 2000 climb of the "Cruz del Sur" in Peru, "Women and Chalk" in Pakistan in 2002 and Yosemite, the Capitan always in 2001. What we needed was a way to connect them all.

I tried commentating the footage myself but the result was disastrous. I'm not cut out to be an actor! And since I didn't like the idea of using a narrating voice, I decide we needed to find someone who wasn't a journalist or someone who wouldn't sound too cold.

I immediately thought of Mauro Corona. First of all, I respect him as a person and we've known each other for years and even though we speak two different languages, in the end we always agree.

One day while I was driving, Cristian got the idea of getting Mauro and I to do a driving trip with two video cameras fixed to the dashboard while we spoke about anything and everything. No script and without time limits. The result was great mostly because it was spontaneous and that's what both of us excel at.

The rest was up to Cristian who did an excellent job of editing the footage and mixing images of the climbs with our discussions, it was all very difficult because we didn't have a logic to our conversation. Each of us told our stories to see whether we had learnt anything from life in the fifteen years that we've known each other.

The director:
Cristian Cristian Furlan was born in Cordoba, Argentina in 1969. In 1995, after years of intense speleological and climbing activity, he decided to unite his great passion for climbing with his love of filming by beginning a career as a documentary maker, specializing in filming in difficult locations such as walls, ice and caves.
And so Barcodefilms was born, a studio dedicated to producing extreme sports films.
Among the more recent films: Hong Gui Wang, China 2000 Expedition, Tool'em All, E.Y.C. 2001.
